About
With L'extase, star mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená presents the seventh album of her exclusive collaboration with Pentatone, after having presented Il giardino dei sospiri, Soirée (both 2019), Nostalgia (2021), Folk Songs (2023), the title role in Handel’s Alcina and Czech Songs (both 2024). One of the most revered artists of our time, Mitsuko Uchida is known as a peerless interpreter of the works of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven, as well for being a devotee of the piano music of Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and György Kurtág. She makes her PENTATONE debut.

Europadisc Review
Reviews
The many links between Debussy and Messiaen remain under-explored in recorded terms, making this revealing programme of mainly early songs an appealing recital in its own right. ... The Debussy collections move backwards from the late 1890s to the mid-1880s, starting with verse by Pierre Louÿs – the acute Sapphicisms of Chansons de Bilitis inspiring songs to whose rarefied expression Magdalena Kožená is keenly attuned. ... Mitsuko Uchida responds at all times with a poise and insight to make one regret that she has not played more French music. ... the qualities conveyed by the present artists cannot be gainsaid. ‘L’extase’ indeed! Richard Whitehouse
Kozena and Uchida are an unlikely but potent pairing ... The composer is mostly Debussy, with 13 minutes of Messiaen added, and the ecstasy flagged up by the album’s title, L’extase, never ceases. ... it remains an intoxicating album, provided that you like French perfume and are comfortable swooning without stop for 71 minutes. Geoff Brown
The three Debussy cycles shine thanks to the luminous sheen of Kožená’s voice. Compared to some other performances on record, Kožená and Uchida give themselves more time, allowing a potent atmosphere to build. ... Messiaen had a Wagnerian soprano for the premiere of his Poèmes pour Mi and Kožená is not that, but her mezzo quality comes into play, providing depth and variety of tone colours. There is much beauty here and no little sensitivity.
